Tour Overview
The Rongai Route is the only Mount Kilimanjaro trail that approaches the mountain from the northern side near the Kenyan border. This route is renowned for its remote wilderness, fewer crowds, gradual ascent profile, and excellent acclimatization opportunities, making it one of the most successful routes for reaching Uhuru Peak.
The trek traverses diverse ecological zones, from montane forests and moorlands to alpine desert and arctic summit landscapes. Descending via the Marangu Route provides trekkers with varied scenery throughout the adventure.

Itinerary
Day 1 Rongai Gate (1,950m) to Simba Camp (2,625m)
Hiking Time: 3–4 Hours
Altitude Gain: +675m
After breakfast, drive approximately 3–4 hours to the northern side of Mount Kilimanjaro near the Kenyan border. Upon arrival at Rongai Gate, complete park registration formalities before beginning your adventure.
The trek starts through a beautiful montane forest characterized by tall indigenous trees, dense vegetation, and abundant wildlife. This section is one of the few areas on Kilimanjaro where climbers may encounter colobus monkeys, blue monkeys, and a variety of bird species. The forest gradually thins as the trail ascends into the heath and moorland zone.
As you leave the forest behind, the landscape opens dramatically, revealing sweeping views across the Kenyan plains. The trail remains relatively gentle, making it an ideal introduction to the mountain while allowing your body to begin adjusting to the altitude.
Upon arrival at Simba Camp, enjoy dinner prepared by your mountain crew while taking in your first views of the higher slopes of Kilimanjaro.
Overnight: Simba Camp (2,625m)
Weather: 10°C–20°C
Day 2 Simba Camp (2,625m) to Second Cave Camp (3,450m)
Hiking Time: 3–4 Hours
Altitude Gain: +825m
After breakfast, continue your ascent through open moorland terrain. The vegetation becomes increasingly sparse, dominated by hardy alpine shrubs and grasses adapted to the mountain environment.
The trail offers exceptional panoramic views toward Amboseli National Park in Kenya and the vast plains stretching beyond the mountain. The relatively short hiking day is strategically designed to promote gradual acclimatization and reduce the risk of altitude-related complications later in the climb.
Throughout the day, your guide will encourage a slow and steady pace known as "Pole Pole," the Swahili phrase meaning "slowly slowly," which is essential for successful acclimatization on Kilimanjaro.
Arriving at Second Cave Camp in the afternoon provides ample time for relaxation and optional acclimatization walks around the surrounding ridges.
Overnight: Second Cave Camp (3,450m)
Weather: 5°C–15°C
Day 3 Second Cave Camp (3,450m) to Kikelewa Camp (3,630m)
Hiking Time: 3–5 Hours
Altitude Gain: +180m
Today's trek is relatively short but extremely important for acclimatization. The route gradually leaves the broad moorlands and begins climbing toward the rugged eastern slopes beneath Mawenzi Peak.
As you gain altitude, dramatic views of Mawenzi, Kilimanjaro’s jagged and ancient volcanic cone, dominate the landscape. The trail passes through unique high-altitude vegetation including giant groundsels and everlasting flowers, species found only in East Africa's alpine zones.
The moderate altitude gain allows your body additional time to adapt while preserving energy for the higher elevations ahead. Upon arrival at Kikelewa Camp, enjoy magnificent sunset views over the northern wilderness.
Overnight: Kikelewa Camp (3,630m)
Weather: 5°C–12°C
Day 4 Kikelewa Camp (3,630m) to Mawenzi Tarn Camp (4,330m)
Hiking Time: 3–4 Hours
Altitude Gain: +700m
The day begins with a steeper ascent through alpine terrain as you leave vegetation behind and enter a more rugged mountain environment. The scenery becomes increasingly dramatic with towering volcanic formations and expansive views across the mountain.
The trail climbs steadily to Mawenzi Tarn Camp, one of Kilimanjaro’s most spectacular campsites. Situated beside a small alpine lake directly beneath the towering cliffs of Mawenzi Peak, the camp offers extraordinary scenery unlike anywhere else on the mountain.
Following lunch, climbers participate in an acclimatization hike to a higher elevation before returning to camp for dinner and overnight rest. This "climb high, sleep low" strategy significantly improves acclimatization and increases summit success rates.
Overnight: Mawenzi Tarn Camp (4,330m)
Weather: 0°C–10°C
Day 5 Mawenzi Tarn Camp (4,330m) to Kibo Hut (4,700m)
Hiking Time: 5–6 Hours
Altitude Gain: +370m
After breakfast, trek across the famous Saddle, a vast alpine desert stretching between Mawenzi and Kibo Peaks. This barren landscape creates a surreal atmosphere, often compared to walking on another planet.
The terrain is relatively gentle but the altitude becomes increasingly noticeable. Climbers are encouraged to maintain a slow pace, stay hydrated, and conserve energy for summit night.
Kibo Hut sits directly beneath Kibo's summit cone and serves as the base camp for the final ascent. Upon arrival, enjoy an early dinner and receive a detailed briefing from your guide regarding the summit attempt.
Most climbers retire to their sleeping bags in the late afternoon to rest before being awakened around midnight.
Overnight: Kibo Hut (4,700m)
Weather: -5°C to 5°C
Day 6 Kibo Hut (4,700m) – Gilman’s Point (5,685m) – Stella Point (5,756m) – Uhuru Peak (5,895m) – Horombo Hut (3,720m)
Hiking Time: 12–15 Hours
Altitude Gain: +1,195m
Altitude Loss: -2,175m
This is the most challenging and rewarding day of the entire expedition.
Around midnight, begin the ascent under a canopy of stars. Climbers use headlamps to navigate the steep volcanic scree slopes leading toward Gilman’s Point. The climb is physically demanding due to the high altitude, cold temperatures, and steep terrain.
After several hours of steady climbing, reach Gilman’s Point on the crater rim. From here, continue along the rim to Stella Point, where breathtaking views of the glaciers and surrounding landscape begin to emerge.
The final section to Uhuru Peak is less steep but requires determination due to the altitude. Reaching Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa at 5,895 meters, is an unforgettable achievement. Witness the sunrise illuminating the glaciers and endless plains below while celebrating your accomplishment.
After photographs and a brief rest, descend carefully back to Kibo Hut for refreshments before continuing down to Horombo Hut for a well-deserved overnight stay.
Overnight: Horombo Hut (3,720m)
Weather: -20°C to -5°C at the summit
Day 7 Horombo Hut (3,720m) to Marangu Gate (1,860m)
Hiking Time: 5–7 Hours
Altitude Loss: -1,860m
Following breakfast, begin your final descent through the heath and moorland zone before entering the lush rainforest. The oxygen-rich air and warmer temperatures provide a welcome contrast to the harsh summit environment.
As you descend, enjoy the final views of Kilimanjaro’s diverse ecosystems while reflecting on the incredible achievement of reaching the Roof of Africa.
Upon arrival at Marangu Gate, climbers receive official Kilimanjaro National Park summit certificates. Your driver will then transfer you back to your hotel in Moshi where a hot shower, comfortable accommodation, and celebration await.
Weather: 15°C–25°C
