Floating Over the Endless Plains
A hot air balloon safari over the Serengeti is regularly described as the highlight of our clients' entire African adventure. But what exactly happens during this magical morning, and is it worth the premium price tag?
The Early Wake-Up Call
The adventure begins before dawn. You will be picked up from your luxury lodge around 4:30 AM and driven to the launch site in the dark. Arriving at the site, you will sip hot Tanzanian coffee while watching the crew inflate the massive balloon with roaring flames against the dark sky.
The Flight
You lift off just as the sun begins to peek over the horizon. The flight lasts about an hour.
- The Silence: Except for the occasional roar of the burner, the flight is incredibly peaceful. You float silently above the savanna.
- The View: From the air, you grasp the true scale of the Serengeti. You might drift over a pod of hippos in a river, herds of galloping wildebeest, or even a pride of lions finishing a hunt.
- The Photography: The golden morning light provides spectacular, unobstructed aerial photography opportunities.
The Champagne Bush Breakfast
In true safari tradition, wherever the balloon lands, a luxurious setup awaits. You will be greeted with a glass of chilled champagne, followed by a full English breakfast cooked right there in the bush under the shade of an acacia tree. You will receive a flight certificate to commemorate the journey.
Is it Worth it?
Yes. While it adds to your safari budget (typically around $500 - $600 per person), the unique perspective, the romance, and the exclusivity make it an unforgettable, once-in-a-lifetime experience. Asoupe Travel can easily add a balloon flight to any of our Serengeti itineraries upon request.
